Well, it’s been five days since my brothers and I became official Flippers! Our house closed escrow last week and we didn’t waste a minute getting started on cleaning it up. As a result, I learned there are many resources available when you want to remove stuff from your home/property.
First, our house came with two of each type of city trash cans: solid waste, recyclables, and yard waste, which we quickly filled. Next we ordered a huge trash dumpster that will come next week to hold all of the carpet, tile, bathroom fixtures, popcorn ceiling, and old cabinets that need to be removed.
Next, we called Margaritos Recycling Service, who came today to pick up anything metal including appliances, air conditioner units, curtain rods, metal shelves, and even a refrigerator! I had contemplated renting a trailer and hauling away our excess metal to a scrap yard, but no need! Margaritos came to me!
We also have several filing cabinets, big and small, that I lined up on the driveway today. Before I finished getting all of them out there, the next door neighbor stopped by to purchase two! Which reminded me that I could post items for sale to online apps. So I took pictures and posted them to Offer Up, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist. The apps are so easy to use and show you all the views your items are getting. They also provide a third party vehicle to communicate with your potential buyers.
This weekend we will do an old school garage sale in the hopes of finding new homes and owners for all the possessions in the house we cannot use. We will also make use of the hazardous waste station to safely dispose of all the extra paint, propane tanks, and household cleaners that need to go away. And we’ll probably call the city for a bulky item pick-up of the things that don’t go anywhere else.
Aside from the cost of the huge dumpster, everything else is free! Anything we make from selling stuff will go back into the renovation budget to make the home even nicer. I also love the idea that most of the items will be recycled, repurposed, or disposed of properly and won’t end up in a landfill.
So that’s this week’s Project Report. If you are doing a similar clean-up at your home, I hope these resources are helpful. If you’re cleaning up your place to sell, I’d love to help. Come visit me over at FirstHomeEd.com and let’s get started.
So many good things to come,
Diana Cohen
