The Project Report Week 4

This week while working on our project house, we started imagining who might come to live in it when we finish. Will it be a young couple hoping to fill all the bedrooms with future children? Will it be a more established family needing a little space for each individual? Will it be a multi-generational family with grandparents, parents, and children all living together under one roof? Whoever it is that moves in will be able to enjoy all the benefits of homeownership.

We spent Sunday morning having brunch at our daughter and son-in-law’s home. Sitting on their cute patio, I was reminded that for us, and them, and many others, homeownership means more time with family. Alexis and Brandon invited both sets of parents and their siblings to share Sunday morning with them. They decorated their home, shopped for groceries and drinks, and got ready to host their family.

And host, they did! It was such a joy to see them in the kitchen preparing the green chili egg casserole, getting mimosas for the mamas, and turning on the football game for the dads. They told stories of a recent party they held at their house for all their friends, and how at the end of the night, they looked at each other and said, “This is our home. We own it.”

And since they have become homeowners, they made one of their two bedrooms a guest room. (I call it my room as I have been a guest there on more than one occasion.) They are the go-to retreat for Alexis’s cousin who attends San Diego State. When she needs a night away from school and roommate drama, she goes to their house. And when Alexis’s brother needs a San Diego room for the night, he books his accommodations at their place.

Owning your own home certainly comes with a sense of accomplishment and pride; a feeling of having achieved a milestone in life. It brings many joys like being able to invite your family in for whatever they might need. It also brings tax advantages and a hedge against inflation and rising rents. In California, our houses will continue to appreciate in value. If you are dreaming of joining the homeownership club, come visit me over at FirstHomeEd.com and let’s make a plan to get you membership!

So many good things to come,

Diana Cohen
